The UP Diliman University Library would like to acknowledge the receipt of a Xitrix PowerFrame R-2500 rack-mount server, amounting to 294,570.00 in Philippine Pesos, paid for by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association - The Netherlands Chapter (UPAA-NL) in April 2012. This server is now being used to host most of the University Library’s databases, and because of its large storage capacity (8TB), it is also being used to host the uploaded digitized resources (e.g., rare books, theses, dissertations, special collections) of the diliman libraries.

The UPAA-NL, founded in 1992 and was re-established in 2006, is an association of UP alumni residing, working, or studying in The Netherlands. In compliance with Netherlands law, the UPAA-NL is registered as an association with full legal rights at the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce in The Hague by notary’s deed. The UPAA-NL is officially awarded the certificate of accreditation by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association and the UP Office of Alumni Relations in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association, Inc. in February 2009.

UPAA-NL has been supporting the automation and digitization projects of the UP Diliman University Library since 2008 when they agreed to provide five (5) server units for the University Library network in order to give students, faculty members and staff of all university constituents and outside researchers the best possible access to information they need in support of instruction, research and extension.

The PowerFrame R-2500 server is actually the third donation received by the Diliman University Library from the UPAA-NL. The first was a Dell PowerEdge 1950 Rack-mount Server amounting to 310,000.00 Philippine Pesos acquired in June 2008, and is currently being used to host this Web site (www.mainlib.upd.edu.ph).

In 2010 (August-September), upon our request, UPAA-NL funded the installation of a structured cabling, including voice and data nodes, at the Main Library Building (Gonzalez Hall) in lieu of another server. The structured cabling work, which amounted to 298,990.00 Philippine Pesos, has enabled our Data Center to provide a more efficient and stable network infrastructure as a central hub of the Diliman network of more than 35 College/Unit libraries.

The financial assistance provided by the UPAA-NL was made possible through their successful organization of fund raising activities which highlight our rich Filipino culture and whenever possible give UP talents a place of prominence.
